little jobs

sometimes when you get in the studio it's repetitive and boring jobs that just need to be done ....
rolling out new plates
sieving slip (even with a fancy photo finish - this job is boring!!)
can be kind of meditative, i suppose?

Mugs with handles - how about that!

The lovely ladies at Milan Rouge Contemporary Craft and Design in Stirling laid down a challenge for their upcoming Mugs Day on June 28th - Mugs With Handles!
This may not seem like a crazy mad challenge for a potter but as my mouth said "yeah, sure" my mind said "when was the last time you made a mug with a handle except for class demos?!?".

With the aid of my photo albums I can tell you - 2005!! Production Throwing at ACArts. And I was mighty proud of my Phil Hart double butted handles, I can tell you!

So, I embarked on a small run of kids' mugs and expanding the "Gather and Share" range.
These babies reminded me why I stopped making handles.
So Many Steps. And Crack Opportunities (no such thing as a good crack).

throw mugs, trim mugs, pull handles, attach handles, decorate with slip.....
.... scraffito designs, scrape back rims and bases, dry slowly, hope there's no cracks....
But when they're all done they reminded me why I quite like handles. cause they're all sort of proper finished like, aye?

Now they're entrusted to the kiln, here's hoping for the best :)

FacebookBlog?

haven't been blogging so much lately. FB has taken over (in so many ways!) my musings every now and then but here's the latest happenings....

These little spots of colour are now at E for Ethel, a most delightful little shop in North Adelaide :) Also a series of decals to go with the little plates and cups already residing at E for Ethel. Mum could drink from the cup whilst wearing the ear-rings with a biccie or two on the plate, couldn't she?

head over to FB and have a squizz if you're keen.

What to do with a Palm Plate?

oooh, i LOVE it... but what do you DO with it?

here's some of what I do with my "Palm Plates" - plates that fit in the palm of your hand  (and are the size of mine :)
keeping my cup of tea hot if called away (to take photos for a blog, for example), bananas for a snack....... also spices when you're cooking dinner, rings while you're kneading dough or a spoon rest.
wonder what else they get up to?

top photo co-stars elodie barker mug and susan frost cup.

PS In case you were wondering, you can buy some at Urban Cow Studio.

2014 started with a rush of making... Here's some of the ear-rings from "Collective" with their new owner :)

Since then I have been a little bit more relaxed work-wise, working on pieces for retail shops and a new commission based on nesting bowls. I'm also occupied with getting the studio at Henley and Grange Arts Society running smoothly, especially now we have 3 regular groups as well as classes. I'm working to create a welcoming, peaceful, friendly space for people to work  - pop into the studio to see how it's all going!
